There are love stories in Hollywood that end with a spectacular goodbye, accusations, interviews and revelations. And then there are relationships that simply change shape, leaving behind something quieter but perhaps just as meaningful.
The story of Richard Gere and Carey Lowell belongs, in my opinion, to the second category.
For someone like me who has always been fascinated not only by Richard Gere the actor but also by the man behind the famous face, his relationship with Carey has always represented a particularly interesting chapter of his life. It was a long relationship, a marriage, the birth of a son and, eventually, a difficult separation. But it was also a story in which both seemed determined to protect what mattered most: their family.
How Richard Gere met Carey Lowell
Richard and Carey met in 1995, shortly after Gere’s divorce from Cindy Crawford. Carey Lowell was already known as an actress and former model, particularly for her role as a Bond girl in Licence to Kill.
According to contemporary accounts, they were introduced by a mutual friend, interior designer Sharon Simonaire. The meeting was initially little more than a blind date, but it immediately became something much more important. They spent the weekend together and, before long, the relationship had become serious.
There was something very different about this relationship compared with Richard’s previous marriage. Carey seemed to understand his increasingly private world, his spirituality and his growing commitment to Buddhism. At the same time, she brought a more grounded and social energy into his life.
They stayed together for almost two decades.
Homer: the child who changed everything
In February 2000, Richard and Carey became parents to their only child together, Homer James Jigme Gere.
For Richard, fatherhood was a profound experience. Years later, he described becoming a father as something that happened naturally when he met the right woman. He was 50 when Homer was born, and he spoke openly about how much joy his son brought into his life.
Even Homer’s name tells a little of the story of his family. “Homer” honors Richard’s father, while “James” refers to Carey’s father. “Jigme” is a Tibetan name associated with Richard’s Buddhist path.
Two years after their son’s birth, Richard and Carey finally married. The ceremony took place privately in November 2002, away from the enormous media circus that had surrounded some of Richard’s previous relationships.
By then they had already been together for around seven years.
When love begins to change
But even long relationships can reach a point where two people discover that they are no longer looking in the same direction.
Richard and Carey separated in 2013, after around 18 years together and 11 years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in 2016 after several years of legal proceedings.
The reasons most often reported at the time concerned different lifestyles. Richard had become increasingly committed to a quiet, private existence shaped by meditation and Buddhism, while Carey was described as more socially active and comfortable with a more public lifestyle.
But here is something I find particularly important. We don’t really know everything that happened between them. And perhaps we shouldn’t. Richard has always been extremely protective of his private life. Neither he nor Carey turned their marriage breakdown into a public spectacle, and Richard has generally avoided turning personal pain into material for interviews.
For me, this is part of his character.
Hollywood loves stories of spectacular break-ups. It loves revelations, accusations and private details. Richard has usually chosen the opposite path: silence.
And silence can sometimes be a form of respect.
A divorce doesn’t erase a family
Their marriage ended. Their relationship as parents did not.
Whatever difficulties existed between Richard and Carey, Homer remained the bridge connecting them. The two had every reason to continue communicating, cooperating and putting their son’s well-being before everything else.
That is why I find the years after their divorce just as interesting as the years of their marriage.
There was no need to pretend that the love story had never existed. It simply became something different.
Richard went on to build a new life with Alejandra Silva, while Carey continued her own path. But the bond created by Homer remained. And today, that bond has acquired a new dimension.
Homer follows his father’s footsteps
Homer, who grew up largely away from the Hollywood spotlight, is now beginning his own career as an actor.
He has already appeared in Euphoria and is starring alongside Kaia Gerber in Ryan Murphy’s The Shards, while other projects are also on the horizon. Richard has spoken proudly about his son’s talent and professionalism and has offered him advice about what it takes to build a sustainable acting career.
The love story ended. The family story didn’t
And there is something almost poetic about seeing Homer now step into the world that has defined so much of his father’s life.
He strongly resembles Carey in many photographs, and seeing mother and son together makes their connection immediately apparent. Carey herself made a rare public appearance with Homer at the premiere of The Shards, a beautiful reminder that, whatever happened to her marriage to Richard, the mother-son bond has remained extraordinarily strong.
At the same time, Richard is clearly proud of the young man Homer has become. He isn’t simply trying to create another Richard Gere. Quite the opposite: he seems determined to encourage his son to find his own identity. That, to me, is what a good father does.
I have always admired Richard Gere, and perhaps this is why I find this chapter of his life so fascinating.
His relationship with Carey Lowell didn’t have a Hollywood fairy-tale ending. They fell in love, built a family, married, faced difficulties and eventually separated, but not every love story has to survive as a marriage to have been important.
Some relationships leave us with something that remains long after the romantic part is over. In Richard and Carey’s case, that something is Homer.
Today, as their son begins to establish himself as an actor, the connection between Richard and Carey continues in a completely different form. The romantic love may have ended, but the bond created by becoming parents can last a lifetime. And perhaps there is something beautiful in that.
