Richard Gere’s third marriage with Alejandra Silva: a love that grew beyond the age gap

There are love stories that arrive unexpectedly, and then there are those that seem to make sense only after you look back at them. Richard Gere and Alejandra Gere belong, at least for me, to the second kind. Their relationship began quietly, far from the Hollywood spotlight, and over the years has developed into something much deeper than the glamorous romance one might have expected from one of Hollywood’s most famous actors.

They first met in Italy, at Villa Treville in Positano, a place connected to Alejandra’s family and professional life. Their paths had crossed before, but it was around 2014 that their friendship gradually became something more. Gere has recalled that from the very beginning he felt an extraordinary connection, while Alejandra took a little longer to understand where that feeling might lead.

There is also a wonderfully amusing detail that says a lot about the unusual circumstances of their meeting. Richard has joked that when Alejandra first met him, she didn’t really know who he was and even thought he might have been George Clooney. Whether taken literally or as one of Richard’s favourite jokes about their beginnings, the story has become part of the charm of this relationship.

A courtship without the Hollywood script

Their relationship developed gradually. There was a significant age difference between them, but apparently neither of them allowed that to become the defining element of their story. Alejandra was much younger, yet she has spoken about how naturally their relationship developed and how little she actually noticed the age gap.

Perhaps this is one of the things I find most interesting about Richard Gere’s love story. After two very different marriages, he seemed to have found in Alejandra not simply another romantic partner, but someone with whom he could share a way of looking at life.

They spent their first years together between the United States and Europe, taking their time before building a family. Their relationship eventually became more serious, and in 2018 they married in a very private ceremony. They later celebrated their union with a Buddhist ceremony at Gere’s estate in New York, surrounded by family and close friends.

A family built together

Their family grew quickly. Their first son, Alexander, was born in 2019, followed by their second son, James, in 2020. Together with Richard’s son Homer and Alejandra’s son Albert from previous relationships, they created a large blended family.

And I think this is where their relationship becomes even more interesting.

Richard was already a deeply spiritual man when Alejandra entered his life. Buddhism had been an important part of his existence for decades, but rather than simply accepting it as something belonging to her husband, Alejandra became curious about his practice.

Richard has described one particularly meaningful moment from the early days of their relationship. While staying at his home near New York, he told Alejandra that he was going to meditate, as he did every day. Instead of simply accepting this as one of his habits, she asked him afterwards what he had been doing. That question opened the door to a much deeper conversation about meditation, the mind and Buddhism. Gere has said that Alejandra soon discovered that Buddhism touched something very deeply within her too.

For me, this is an important detail. Their connection was not built only on attraction. It was built on curiosity, shared values and the willingness to enter the other’s world.

Love, spirituality and humanitarian work

Another strong bond between Richard and Alejandra is their commitment to humanitarian causes. Their shared interest in helping vulnerable people has become an important part of their life together.

In recent years, they have been involved in projects connected with homelessness and social exclusion in Spain, including work with Hogar Sí and other humanitarian initiatives. Their move to Spain has also brought them closer to this side of their lives.

Richard’s connection with humanitarian causes is, of course, much older than his relationship with Alejandra, but I like the fact that he has found a partner who doesn’t simply accept this part of his life from the outside. She participates in it.

That kind of shared purpose can be a powerful glue in a relationship.

Richard chooses Alejandra’s world

One of the gestures that impressed me most came when Richard decided to move with his family to Spain.

After years of living in his world, in the United States, he recognised that Alejandra had made an enormous sacrifice by building their family far from her own country and family. So he decided it was time to do the same for her.

He explained it beautifully: Alejandra had been generous enough to spend years living in his world, so he felt it was only fair that he should spend several years living in hers. The family moved to Madrid in 2024, allowing Alejandra to be closer to her family, friends and culture.

It is a simple gesture, but perhaps one of the most romantic things about their relationship.

Love is not only about saying I love you. Sometimes it is about saying: Now I will come into your world.

A couple that seems to have found its balance

Today, Richard and Alejandra appear to have found a balance between family life, spirituality, humanitarian work and the inevitable public attention that comes with being married to one of Hollywood’s most recognisable actors.

They are not constantly on display. In fact, they seem to prefer a relatively private family life, appearing publicly mainly for professional commitments, humanitarian causes or special events. And yet, whenever they do appear together on a red carpet, there is something immediately noticeable: the complicity.

They look at each other. They laugh. They touch. There is an ease between them that is difficult to fake. And perhaps that is why I find their relationship so reassuring.

My opinion: a love story that makes me happy

I have followed Richard Gere for so many years that I have seen many different chapters of his life. I have admired his films, his extraordinary career, his spiritual journey and his commitment to causes that matter to him. But seeing him with Alejandra gives me a particular feeling of happiness.

Yes, there is a considerable age gap between them. But after all these years, that seems almost irrelevant. What matters is the way they seem to look at one another, the family they have built, the interests they share and the life they have chosen together.

I love seeing Richard happy. And I especially love seeing him and Alejandra together on the red carpet because their chemistry is unmistakable: it is warm, natural and full of affection.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about their story is that it doesn’t feel like a Hollywood fairy tale, it feels like two people who, after having lived very different lives, found each other at the right moment — and decided not to waste that opportunity.
