One of the things I love most about Fortunella House is that it offers much more than a comfortable place to stay.
When you step out onto the balcony, you are greeted by one of Naples’ most fascinating historical landmarks: Porta Capuana, framed by its two imposing towers, Onore and Virtù.
Every time I look at this view, I am reminded that in Naples, history is never hidden inside museums. It is part of everyday life.
The gateway to the Kingdom of Naples
Built in 1484 during the reign of King Ferrante I of Aragon, Porta Capuana was designed by the architect Giuliano da Maiano after the city’s defensive walls were expanded. Despite its name, the gate is not located near the modern road leading to Capua. Instead, it inherited the name from an older medieval gate that once stood closer to the original route toward the city of Capua.
For centuries, Porta Capuana represented one of the principal entrances into Naples. Merchants, nobles, pilgrims, soldiers and travelers all passed through this magnificent gateway before entering one of Europe’s largest and most vibrant cities.
Imagine the countless footsteps that have crossed this threshold over more than five hundred years.
The Towers of Honor and Virtue
Standing proudly on either side of the gate are the two historic towers known as Onore (Honor) and Virtù (Virtue). These cylindrical towers were part of the city’s defensive system and symbolized not only military strength but also the ideals that the Aragonese rulers wished to associate with their kingdom.
Today they continue to watch over Porta Capuana, creating one of the most recognizable architectural scenes in Naples. The elegant white marble façade, richly decorated with classical motifs and royal symbols, contrasts beautifully with the lively streets surrounding it.
It is a place where Renaissance architecture meets the authentic soul of Naples.
A Neighborhood Full of Life
What makes this area truly special is not only its history. It is its atmosphere. Around Porta Capuana you will find local shops, traditional cafés, family-run businesses, historic buildings, and people going about their daily lives. This is not a neighborhood created for tourists.
It is a real Neapolitan community, full of voices, colors, aromas, and stories that have been passed down through generations. Walking through these streets means discovering a Naples that is authentic, vibrant, and wonderfully alive.
Imagining my Guests
Sometimes I like to imagine my guests arriving at Fortunella House for the very first time. Perhaps they have just landed in Naples after a long journey. They step onto the balcony, look around, and suddenly find themselves face to face with Porta Capuana and its magnificent towers.
I imagine their surprise. Their curiosity. Their excitement as they realize they are not simply visiting a city—they are entering centuries of history. That first view often says more than any guidebook ever could.
More than accommodation
For me, this is one of the greatest advantages of staying at Fortunella House. It is not just about having a comfortable apartment in the center of Naples. It is about waking up every morning surrounded by history, architecture, and the unmistakable energy of one of the city’s most authentic neighborhoods.
To breathe the soul of Porta Capuana, to hear its voices, to observe its daily rhythm, and to feel part of its living history is an experience that cannot be recreated. It is one of those small privileges that transform a simple stay into a memory that remains long after the journey has ended.
