Directed by Edward Zwick and based on Lisa Halliday’s acclaimed novel, the film tells the story of Ezra, a world-famous writer played by Richard Gere, and Alice, a young editorial assistant portrayed by Diana Silvers. Their unexpected relationship begins in secret and gradually challenges not only their own lives but also the people around them.
What has sparked so much discussion is the significant age difference between the two protagonists. While some viewers praise the film for exploring a complex and emotionally layered relationship, others have criticized the story before even seeing it, questioning both its premise and Richard Gere’s decision to take on the role.
Personally, I believe that fiction should never be judged before it is experienced. Great cinema has always explored difficult, controversial, and thought-provoking subjects.
